Kong Classic

Perhaps the question here is why NOT get a Kong toy for your dog?  There is really no downside. For under $10, you’ll have a toy that will likely last your dog’s lifetime. We still have our original Kongs here.

The Kong toy is made in the USA, with thick, natural rubber that does not puncture or break apart easily. It is safe to chew on, wears well, and cleans up easily. It comes in several sizes; I personally like medium or large for the size of the hole (for stuffing things into). There is no “wrong” size – it’s just a matter of preference.

The Kong toy is a classic cornerstone of our toy repertoire here. When the dogs were puppies, they could gnaw on the Kong with no concern about hurting their teeth, making a mess or swallowing anything harmful. As the dogs have aged, the Kong toy has continued to add variety to their lives, as it can be used in a variety of ways.

Sometimes you will fill the Kong with peanut butter (our favorite), or cheese whiz, or even whipped cream. Sometimes you will freeze the Kong with its filling, to harden the texture. Don’t forget the little treasures you can throw in there, that will pop out when your dog rolls the Kong toy around – little pieces of kibble, or cheese cubes, or even Cheerios or Rice Krispies.

For exercise, discover the Kong’s erratic bounce when it drops from your throw, which can be quite exciting for your dog to retrieve! It has a hole at both ends, so go ahead and thread a small rope or thick shoelace for an extra wind-up (and more distance) in your throw.

Outside or inside, the Kong toy does not create a mess.  The Kong itself cleans up easily. Soak it, or throw it in the dishwasher, and let it dry with your dishes.

Again, why not? If you’ve already got one, perhaps it would be the perfect gift for your friend with a new dog. This is a no-brainer… enjoy!
