“Dogs in Knits” by Judith L. Swartz

Review by Pam Rybinski

The extra cold weather in many parts of the country may make this book a must-have for dog lovers who knit or crochet. The subtitle is “17 Projects for Our Best Friends.”  Beautifully illustrated, the book includes detailed directions on how to measure your dog, and a glossary of abbreviations and techniques such as “intarsia” and “stranding methods for 2-color knitting.”  Patterns range from your “Basic Knitted Dog Sweater” for beginner-level knitters to “Crazy Quilt Sweater” for the experienced knitter. For more unusual projects, check out the directions for “Folk Art Plush Pillow” and “Bigfoot Christmas Stocking.” Interspersed throughout the patterns are tidbits of information for and about canines: natural flea treatments, a treat recipe, a greyhound notable fact, service-dog info, and Tips for Three-dog Nights.
