Thunderstorms – End the Mystique

Everywhere I turn, I hear someone mention their dog’s trouble with thunderstorms. Caring dog mommas and poppas have invested in treats, Thundershirts, drugs, and even stronger cages. Well, here’s one more idea for your artillery. At our house, this technique has not only helped, but has become a fun tradition!

The whole premise is to let your natural dog handle this natural occurrence herself. How? By filling her canine senses with all the information she needs to evaluate the storm.

Indoors (or in a confined space), the thunder must seem ominous and threatening. But outside, it is more natural. Provide a protected yet open area, and let your dog experience the strong breeze, the scents, the dark sky. Add a calm Momma to give a sense of protection (and maybe even fun!), and the recipe is complete.

As with any training, remember to try a few times before giving up. Very best of luck to you!
