“The Lost Dogs, Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption” by Jim Gorant

Review by Pam Marr Rybinski

Non dog-lovers and canine enthusiasts alike should take a look at this remarkable story of the fifty-one pit bulls taken from Michael Vick’s dog-fighting farm. The author originally covered the front-page story of the horrifying scandal for his widely read sports magazine. His article appeared on the cover of the December 28, 2008 issue of “Sports Illustrated.”

The history and background of the popular Atlanta Falcon Quarterback’s scandal, and the uncertain future of his canine victims are given. The author delivers some of the heart-wrenching details through the personas of the tortured and maimed pit-bulls, forty-seven of which were “saved,” some of them to go on to become therapy dogs, most to become loving household pets. The dedication of the people who came to their rescue is nothing short of inspiring. Gorant’s rendition is compelling from beginning to end, detailing the blood lust of the most violent of us, the selfless love and dedication of some of us, and the historical and present value of those strong, agile, and loving canines commonly referred to as pit bulls.
