“Gretchen, the Bicycle Dog” by Anita Heyman

Review by Pam Rybinski

“Gretchen, The Bicycle Dog” is the real-life story of Gretchen the Dachshund, as presented in plain language, along with engaging photographs, by Anita Heyman. The book came highly recommended by a fifth grader whom I met recently, who was deeply moved by Gretchen’s determination and good nature after a crippling accident.  From an adorable coffee-mug-size puppy to a fearless adolescent, Gretchen blossoms with love and affection. Then, one careless mistake leads to  pain and mayhem, which Gretchen handles much like the “little engine who could.” Gretchen’s success is moving (literally and figuratively) as well as inspirational. The ratio of pictures to words helps those who’ve just begun to read. Look for it in the non-fiction children’s area.
