“First Dog”: DVD Starring Eric Roberts, Tiny Lister, John-Paul Howard, Featuring Original Songs by Dolly Parton

Review by Pam Marr Rybinski

This family-oriented 97-minute DVD combines a shy but determined foster child named Danny with an extremely engaging lost dog named Teddy. Bad guys, good guys, suspense, and near-death experiences will keep most viewers on the edge of their seats, without graphic blood or gore.

“First Dog” is who he sounds like he is, the President of the United States of America’s faithful canine family member. As Secret Service agents whisk the President off to safety during a public gathering, Teddy is inadvertently left behind. Rather than sound a public alarm, which could result in ransom demands, the President depends on his staff to find Teddy and to bring him home.

Teddy, being a rather exceptional dog, does his best to get home on his own, but takes time on his way to befriend Danny Millbright, a lonely foster child who has been taught to “do the right thing.” When young Danny eventually connects Teddy’s collar tag to the White House, he tries to call and “do the right thing.” Needless to say, his phone call is treated as a prank.

When young Danny’s foster Mother does not believe him either, Danny and Teddy do what they must. They begin their own cross-country journey to Washington, D.C.
