“Dog Train: a Wild Ride on the Rock-and-Roll Side”, Songs and Illustrations by Sandra Boynton

Review by Pam Marr Rybinski

Great illustrations, lively music by fourteen groups including Hootie & the Blowfish, and The O.K. Chorale, plus absolutely outrageous lyrics, almost guarantee delight for the family toddler up to those visiting grandparents. It is a singing book, a reading book, a sheet music book, and a captivating CD all in one.

Beginning readers and singers can follow the words as the CD plays. They’re kind of catchy and easy to repeat. “Tantrum” is an example. It begins “No-I don’t want to. I don’t want to. No-I don’t want to. No No.” Put the toddler on the bowl with the spoon, the six-year old on the piano, Dad on his guitar, and Mom on her cymbal, and rock some time away.

Reviewer warning: If solemnity is your gig, avoid this one at all costs.
