“Oh My Dog” by Beth Ostrosky Stern with Kristina Grish

Review by Pam Rybinski

Subtitled “How to Choose, Train, Groom, Nurture, Feed, and Care for Your New Best Friend,” this thick paperback has a comprehensive index with almost any canine topic that you can think of. This is a must-read if you have not yet adopted your special new friend. Not only does it have general breed “good” characteristics, but also it has the other side of the breed-coin, the characteristics that could be negatives for some people. A key element of finding your forever-friend is finding a dog that you will easily bond with, one who will love to walk or run with you if you’re active, a couch-sitter if watching TV or reading is your main method of relaxing.

Tidbits like “Could Your Dog Have Cold-Water Tail,” a condition most likely to affect working breeds like “English Pointers, English Setters, Viszlas, Foxhounds, Beagles, and Labrador Retrievers” will educate many existing dog lovers,  as will “What does it mean when my dog … Randomly snaps in the air as if there were bugs flying around his head?” and so forth. Last in this informative book is a fill-in-the-blank Questionnaire that helps us sum up the lovable foibles of our own family members, by immortalizing his/her “Best friend . . . Hiding place during a storm. . . Beloved chew toy . . . Biggest Accomplishment . . . Happiest (times). . .
